This application lets you perform the following tasks:
For further details about the system, download the SIMS manual using the [Help] button on the menu
- * Define protocols (Studies) that involve collection of biospecimens (samples). A protocol is given a brief abbreviation and a description, and consists of timepoints at which samples are collected: for each time-point, you can specify the type of biospecimen collected (e.g., blood, urine), the number of aliquots collected, and optionally, the total amount of specimen to be collected. You can also specify which users have access to a given study's data.
- Define patients for a study, and generate barcodes labels for sample collection for each patient based on the protocol. The labels are affixed to storage containers (typically tubes for blood & urine).
-
Define and add to a master list of Freezers and specify storage locations within a freezer.
A storage location consists of racks that are subdivided into slots. Each slot can store 1 box of 100 biospecimens, typically as 10 rows (A-j) and ten columns (1-10). - After biospecimen aliquots are received in the containers, you can scan the barcodes in to indicate that the specimens have been received. During the scanning, you can specify the storage location for each specimen, and optionally, the quantity of specimen received.
-
If specimens need to be processed for shipment externally, you can generate labels for creation of "daughter" aliquots for each original aliquot. During this process, you can track sample consumption (assuming aliquots are not entirely consumed individually during shipment).
When you create a box for external shipment containing aliquots (or dauther aliquots), you can also generate a report that specifies the particular biospecimen in each row and column of a given shipment box. - If you perform periodic reorganization of your specimens by consolidating several partially empty locations, you can record the changed storage locations of these biospecimens during rescanning.
- Run a variety of reports.
- * Create new biospecimen types.
- * Add new users to the system, and define their roles.
